The Rusty Duck is a welcoming café tucked away in the rural charm of Puddletown, just outside Dorchester. Its location near The Heath and close to Puddletown Forest makes it a natural pause point for walkers and cyclists looking for a relaxed spot to refresh. The atmosphere is laid-back and a little quirky, with a friendly vibe that makes it easy to linger over a coffee or light bite.

The café’s appeal lies as much in its local feel as in the menu. The food leans into hearty, straightforward options like the English Duck breakfasts and a selection of vegetarian plates, alongside light bites such as loaded chips and house-made salads. Portion sizes tend to satisfy both those stopping in for a meal and visitors just after some trail-time calories. There’s also a good selection of cakes and pastries, forming a tempting array for anyone who enjoys a sweet treat alongside their tea or coffee. The coffees themselves come well praised, making the café a dependable spot for a quality caffeine break.

Visitors often come here in the morning or early afternoon, especially on weekends when the surrounding forest and countryside draw people out. The Rusty Duck’s somewhat off-the-beaten-path location means it’s quieter than more central cafés, but the steady stream of locals, dog walkers, and cycling groups keep the atmosphere friendly and upbeat rather than sleepy.

Dogs are welcomed and often fawned over by staff, which adds to the approachable, community feel. This, combined with cheerful and attentive service, makes the café a comfortable place to rest after time outdoors. The presence of outdoor seating adds to the relaxed vibe on fine days, allowing visitors to watch local life unfold or enjoy peaceful countryside views.

Altogether, The Rusty Duck suits those who appreciate casual, hearty café food served with warmth and a touch of character. If you’re passing through Puddletown, stopping for a coffee, a substantial breakfast, or just a slice of cake paired with good company feels like a natural part of the day.

One of our favourite places to eat! The food is clearly good quality and well prepared. Probably the best loaded chips I've ever had and decent portion sizes! The only problem I have is deciding which cake to have as they all look and have tasted amazing each time!

Excellent quirky café, somewhat off the beaten track, in a lovely rural setting near Dorchester. Great food and friendly service with an extremely chilled vibe. Great place to call in at after a walk in the nearby Puddletown Forest.

The Rusty Duck is a fabulous café, run by lovely welcoming staff. Dogs are allowed in and enjoy the fuss made of them. Sometimes I have brunch - vegetarian breakfast - sometimes one of the pastries, or a slice of cake. It is a wonderful place to be!

Superb gem of a place, great staff and welcome, fresh and exciting food and drinks offered. Top quality and facilities. All clean and even the restrooms/toilets were a credit (always a tell tale!). You must visit!! We cycled and they even filled out water bottles . Thank you Rusty Duck
